Creation of Sienness...

Golden's blushing maiden
drawing her long sleeves.

Snow White and her seven;

P/S: Funny how meanings in poems can only be understood entirely by the people who write them. So yea, everything your lit teacher tells you about Shakespeare is incomplete. If you don't get mine, it's ok.

Someone think of a title? Thanks :)

When there is uncertainty you...

(a) Persevere? (b) Hold back?

As per usual, I'll start off by saying something along the lines of this...
"I understand that there are others who wish they were in my position right now.. having the choice of furthering my studies at a postgraduate level.. and I feel awfully shamed to be complaining."

However.. true to my own principles as well, I'm going to say..
"I hate to see people undermine and dismiss other's problems just because they themselves see it as no big deal. We all have problems. What is a man (or woman) without his troubles? Isn't it human to compare, contemplate, worry then be despaired? If people have something on their minds that's making them unhappy, it's good to listen. And you know what, sometimes that's all you have to do - just listen."

So begins the rant about my fear....
My name is Helen Su Chien Ya and I think of myself as a to-be psychologist. As I'd told Dr. Haslam and Jeremy, I want to do this, not because I love research, I certainly don't think I'm born for it. Neither am I excited about looking at numbers and try work everything out using correlations, t/z-tests, chi squares, meta-analyses, PCAs, confidence intervals and what have you. I only hope what I'm doing is going to help someone in the future.

Like medicine, psychology is very much about cure. But unlike medicine which is moving towards prevention, the branch "Positive Psychology" is still relatively new, or in Y-gen terms - "noob". Not everything about psychology is about cure though, and sometimes there just isn't one. Things happen, you can't take them back. You can't erase your behaviours, your thoughts and their impact on you or other people. Irreversible. I don't know how much help I can be, but I know I want to contribute to research which have wide implications with regards to therapy/psychological cure.

Here comes the damning part. I want to, but am I capable enough?

You see, it's the grades I don't have. Well, I might be able to squeeze past the quota and even so, that depends on how I do this semester. I haven't gotten any of my assignments back yet, but I'm avoidance-approach. I like preparing myself for everything, I hate not knowing and all the uncertainty. My way of counteracting at the moment is that I've learn how to control my stress levels and keep calm enough to finish my work without panicking. It's not my nature, but I'm trying.

The route is simple.

Undegrad ----> Honours ----> Masters

That's the end of it. I'm getting my B. Arts (Psych(o?)) at the end of this year and I've been studying, researching and applying like mad. Getting into Honours is hell. Countless times I've asked myself... "Why didn't I do this.. and that...". Then I stop and tell myself that I can't change all that now, but I still have control of the present and all I have to do is make it count this time. Just how much I have to do I don't really know. All I know is, I'll be damn disappointed if I don't get in.

It's all very well to say, "It's the process that matters. You're doing it because you have an obligation to show yourself you can." But we humans have desires, goals. That's what drives us in the first place. Goals, wishes and wants, that's what we live for. Even for something as simple as "I want my family to be happy." <---- That's a want.

My current No. 1 Want?
- To be a psychologist.

With this I bear in mind the saying, "The more you wish for, the bigger the disappointment will be when you don't get what you want."

I-P-O Model

It's as simple as Input-Process-Output.

Yea right.

Let me show you a bit of psychology..

That mean thing..
The nice or quiet people always say the meanest things in the end.

In reality, it's probably not the meanest stuff you'd ever hear. You THINK it is because you have this cognitive schema (mental representation) that they are nice, safe, harmless etc. And when they do actually say something out of character, you think it's super SuPeR and SUPER mean just coz you didn't expect that out of them.

Being the human that you are, you immediately label that person as "dangerous". That's why we always say, "It's the quiet ones to watch out for".

Threshold?
People aren't just mean or not mean (categories). Just like there's a bit of good and bad in ourselves. Only that the nice people don't know how to use the bad side until it's too late. Accummulate it inside, find a trigger one day, and explode. If you've seen a friend explode, she/he either feels comfortable doing it in front of you (or feels like you're close/understanding enough to take the abuse), or she/he is directing it to someone who she/he really hates.

And dimensions don't really work well here either. Depending on how nice/rotten you are in the first place, your level of "meanness" is only relative to that (be it perceived by the self or others). E.g. Nice person = mean, thus labelled "uh-oh mood swinger, not good", mean person = oh, typical attitude, thus known as the same, "mean". So we can't say everyone falls on a continuum equally. (English phrasing : Falls equally on a continuum? Bah!)

The poor fella..
Think about it, your nice friend... demure, friendly, church-going, generous thing, suddenly screams "FUCK that sonovabitch!". Wouldn't you be shocked? The protection "mode" comes on, you perceive that phrase, store it in your short term memory while she keeps going on and on about that fella till that one out-of-character phrase gets transferred into your long term memory. That'll be the end of it. What's more, gossip in emotional form gets stuck to your head permanently. Literature says that you are more likely to repeat stuff people deliver to you in an emotional tone. Uh-oh. So next time you tell a secret, try not to get too emotional, your friend is gonna have a harder time keeping that secret if you scream, use an angry tone, or cry. Happy feelings aren't that susceptible to betrayal. Ironic isn't it?

Control
Of course, having a bit of control always helps. Heaps. At least until you find a good friend to vent, then you can let go. Having good friends who've known you for long and accept the way you are is a bonus. That way, they know you well, they judge but they still like you. So it's all good. Thank god for such friends.

Something to de-stress - Here's a happy picture of me and my cousins taken during CNY :)

Of Assignments and Applications

Hey all..

Many apologies, I've been very busy lately. It's a jungle of assignments out there. Cavemen had it really hard back then. It's not easy to be chasing after lions and what not. So what say you to assignments? Well, technically you'd be holding a pen (computer?) rather than a spear I guess.

Very happy to wipe off the list of assignments!
As you can see ---------------------------------------------> GONE!
Hmm.... *stares at the stray*
Oh well, we'll get rid of that one in due time :)

So next up is revision. Hmm.. normally I would be saying, "WTH? There's still what, a month and a half up till exams not including SWOT VAC. Man man lai...."
* Man man lai is mandarin and translates to "slow slow come" literally. Actually just means "to chill.."
** Melb Uni actually calls its study break "swot vacation".. Translation : swot = study hard hard.

But now.. circumstances are different. I want to do Honours and then Postgraduate studies in Psychology. YEAP. I can read minds.

If you believe it, that is. :)

In any case, I should've begun revision two weeks ago. Well, ideallistically that would've been the case. :P

Here are the universities I will be applying to, not listed in any particular order:

Melbourne
University of Melbourne

La Trobe University

Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology

Deakin University

Monash University

Macquarie University

Adelaide
University of Adelaide

University of South Australia

Canberra
Australian National University

Sydney
University of New South Wales

Queensland
University of Queensland

Perth
University of Western Australia

I must admit I have a preference for some more than others though. Adelaide is probably my best shot in terms of grades (or so I was told by my tutor). And I see some really interesting research in Queensland, mostly to do with adolescent development (depression, parenting, child protection, eating disorders, sexuality, psychology of forgiveness) and other stuff like children's understanding of lying and truthfulness, attachment theory and communication, sexism and gender typicality for victim blame in the legal system, morality etc etc. Melbourne Uni of course, has great choices too. Like Dr. Sarah Wilson's music therapy (cognition, brain plasticity) and Mike Nicholls' obssession with laterality (brain asymmetries), not to mention Dr. Carol Hulbert's work on personality disorders (schizotypy in particular) and schizophrenia. It's so hard to choose when you're interested in everything!!

Ok. Enough of being siao siao (crazy). I'm off to dinner now!

Cheers!

P/S : It's our mid sem break now. For two weeks. There's that assignment above to do and revision of course. Not to mention my research for the Research Experience Program under Dr. Nick Haslam I joined at the beginning of the semester. HAH! Some holiday :P

Anger vs. Guilt

There are a lot of times where you get stuck between a rock and a wall. My life's a bit like that now. At least, one aspect of it is.

As most of you know, I come from a reasonably happy background. By happy I mean I get to come overseas to study without financial problems. That's the definition of "happy" these days in this materialistic world. But people often undermine, or just simply forget that having all the niceties and latest stuff in the world cannot make up for a lot of things. Growing up in such an environment made me very dependent and spoilt. I was used to having all the best things and almost whenever I wanted them.

Come first year overseas, I could not handle the prospect of living alone and having to take care of myself. I was weak, clingy, all the superlatives you can think of when describing a girl who has never had to worry about much.

I'd like to think that I've changed now. I have perhaps, in some way, learned to take care of myself more. What has been deemed as responsibility (taking care of bills, paying rent, etc.) is now known as neccessity. On the other hand, I'm the kind of person who cares a whole lot about what other people think of me.

So began this year, a prolonged sense of guilt and anger. My sister came to Melbourne with me this year. In a lot of instances she was very much like me when I first came here. The only difference was she never even had to hold a mop or start up the vacuum cleaner at home like I did as the eldest child. The most trying thing for me up till now, is just trying to be more independent myself AND trying to teach someone else be independent.

I feel angry sometimes. Why is it my responsibility? Why am I even feeling this sense of obligation? Is it just because I'm me? Strong sense of duty? Too afraid of conflicts? Sibling rift examples in the family?

I'm angry. Because I don't think it's fair to have the "responsibility of teaching someone to be independet" dumped on me by my parents because they did not have the strength or the perserverance to do it. I wished my parents had spoilt us a little less, gave in a little less just so we could learn to think on our own.

And then.. after that anger.. I feel guilty, selfish, and unappreciative. My parents especially my dad has given a lot of things to me that others can only wish for. Not just materials, but love and understanding. Time and patience.

I really want to do Honours. And in order to do so I must study very hard this semester. I want to concentrate on me, on my studies, on what I have to do without having to worry about my sister as well, or feeling guilty if I do actually manage to abandon her needs for a while. I know for my own sake, and hers, I must not give in to spoon-feeding her. But then.. I don't want a rift to come in between us.. and it breaks my heart everytime I see her so stressed because I know how it felt like when I was in her position a few years ago.

Sigh.. it's her Literature exam tomorrow. I'm not brewing ideas or constructing sentences for her and I'm feeling very bad right now. I can't concentrate on anything else. My disorders essay is due on Monday and I have not started anything because of the previous two. I wish for this night to be over. I wish for December to come.. I want this anger and this guilt to end.

Newsflash : "Crocodile Hunter" has passed on

:O

This is shocking. After the previous post I navigated to my yahoo page and saw the news.

"Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin is dead!!
How? He was stung by a stingray. Rare case of death after attack by stingray. :/ That must've been some huge-ass fish.

As he would probably respond : "Crikey!"
It's like watching Spiderman get eaten by a spider or something like that.

For more info. as to what happened, please refer to the article in Sydney Morning Herald :
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/steve-irwin-killed-by-stingray/2006/09/04/1157222051512.html

There are a bunch of other articles as well if you're interested, just type in his name and it'll pop out.

Don't know much about the man, only that he is a wildlife-protection activist and is well-known for his rescue and rehabilitation efforts for animals and mostly reptiles among Australians. The Australian National Zoo in Queensland actually belongs to Steve Irwin and his family. Coincidentally, my whole family visited the zoo in Dec 2004. It's a great place, very educational stuff about wildlife portrayed in shows and documentaries. Worth visiting on the basis that it is well-kept and very naturalistic. Plus the fact that we discovered two alligators named "Albert" and "Annie".

Here's a tribute to the great guy:

Steve Irwin, wildlife activist, Australia' No.1 animal lover

and an International icon in wildlife protection.

Unconditional

Here I am.. blogging from the Percy Baxter Centre at the library. That translates to "I am slacking at the "online centre" of the place filled with books which is suppose to make me study like mad."

Umm.. I'm just taking a break from studies (Right. That's a nice way of putting it right Helen?). Well, from my assignment really. :D Almost there, almost done (And that took you like how long? A month?!). About another hour or so should be done liaw.. (More like another night -.-") Hehehe.. Err.. but then again, there are two other assignments (So why the hell are you still blogging?).

Note the title : Unconditional.

What in the whole wide watermelon world does that mean? I'm thinking more from a giving perspective hor.. although I most welcome "unconditional taking/receiving" as well.. Hehe.. but that's not the moral of our story today.

So, unconditional giving. Give what? Good question.

Can be anything lah. Whatever you can think of..

The abstract : Love, time, patience, friendship, commitment.. etc
The practical : A place to stay, borrowing stuff.. sharing stuff.. all that.. and of course MONEY! :P

Don't wanna go on about the other categories e.g. Most common, Most desired and all that ojibala (Translate : This means "everything random" in crazy Malaysian language)..

I guess what I wanna point out is, it's hard to give unconditionally. Damn hard that sometimes people even start out that way, and end up wanting something out of it. What can I say? It's human nature. You look left and right at the people all around you. Then look at yourself. How many different times have you started off something with passion, something with heart and all genuine-ness and end up taking something back anyways?

Say for friendship. At a more surface and simplistic way of looking at it. We would do anything for our friends! And you know what? Why are we willing to do that? Coz some way or the other we do gain a lot out of it too.. When you give your seat to the nice old lady in the tram. What did you gain? Nothing? WRONG!

You got the satisfaction and warm feeling of
1) Doing a good deed.
2) Bringing out the good stuff in you.
3) Having someone acknowledge your thoughtfulness when they smile at you.

The thing to note here is, if what we gain is not SOLID, like.. objects or something which can be seen easily, it's easy to not feel it. Why? Coz we are unappreciative creatures. We're stingy with extending praises (but very generous with criticism), we get jealous easily, we have wants which go beyond the sky. But don't worry, my point here is not to scrutinize and make everyone feel bad about being human. From a practical POV, you see that parent-sibling, friendships, any kind of relationship, you do actually gain. If not, it won't work. Don't deny it. Think carefully before you declare "Oh, hell's no. I'm not as selfish as all that. What I give and do is unconditional."

It's OK to be like that. It's human :) With that being said, appreciate those around you. Show them you care once in a while. :)

*Note to self :
"Hmmm.. seems like the "It's ok to be selfish" part is mostly what you wanna tell yourself eh?" :P

"Yea.. how did you figure that out?"

"Like duh, you have to stop killing yourself over something so naturalistic and HUMAN sometime in the future you know."

"FINE!"

Time-wasting

-.-"

I couldn't sleep!! After crashing on the bed, eyes getting droopy and all, I managed to toss and turn for about an hour or so before getting up again. Sigh. This is SIAW ("nuts"). I guess my mind is still filled with thoughts. So I am hereby placing my thoughts here permanantly and definitely in hopes of finally putting my mind to rest after this and getting some sleep.

So now, where shall I start? I guess chronological order would be best at this time of the day (night?).

FESTIVAL OF NATIONS (29/08-30/08)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Every year, MUOSS (Melbourne University Overseas Students Society) organizes an event called the Festival of Nations. Hmmm.. personally, I think it should be called Feast of Nations. Partly greediness on my part :P (passion for food?) but also because the main events are centred around an array of stalls selling lots and lots of food from various different nations. Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, HongKong, Japan, Korea not to mention people from the Islamic Students Society and the Overseas Christian Fellowship as well.. Hmm.. *looks at the list of countries*, on second thought, maybe they should call it Feast of Asian Countries. LOL.

This year I volunteered at the Chinese Music Group stall (on Tuesday) and our Malaysian club, MoMU-Malaysians of Melbourne University (on Wednesday). CMG sold stuffed peppers (a.k.a. capsicums) skewers as well as barbecued baby octopus while MoMU sold some lovely traditional kuehs (e.g. ang ku kuehs, pulut, kuih lapis, talam, tapioca kueh and yam kueh), sago with coconut milk and gula Melaka (palm sugar) as well as teh tarik.

Thanks Emily! :) I think Jerome was taking the picture, so thanks Jerome!

Other than food stalls, there were live cultural performances on a make-shift stage. This was where the African countries dominated. Their colourful costumes and stomp-dancing really got the crowd going! :) It's hard not to follow and dance as well.. Unfortunately I did not bring my camera with me on Tuesday.. haih.. silly silly me.. so I didn't get any photos of the cultural performances. On Wednesday, there were games stalls set up in place of the stage. MoMU exhibited the games "chap teh" and "batu seremban". Funny names eh? Sound unfamiliar? LOL. I was totally clueless as to what they were really, until I saw the equipment. :) Chap teh is kinda like sepak raga, only that the "raga" is a small squarish piece of rubber attached to a hard base and adorned with a couple of feathers on the top. :) Cute thing really.. Batu seremban is otherwise known as "Five Stones". Scatter 'em on the floor. Pick one, throw it in the air, grab another stone from the floor and catch the one which descends, repeat until you have all five stones. The number of stones you have to grab increases. The person who finishes the entire sequence first wins. Sounds familiar now? I'm sure there are many variations, but essentially that's how the game goes.

One!

There was an eccentricly-dressed (but nice) lady invited to do face-painting for the festivities. :) That's where I decided to have a little fun. Well, the little fun turned out to be kinda HUGE. Heh.. Flags were the norm that day. I initially wanted a small Malaysian flag on my right cheek. But with time not permitting added with the ominous-looking queue, I agreed to a full face paint because the lady said it was easier to draw, considering that our flag had that 14-sided (13? paiseh, forgot :P) star.

I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but MoMU is a relatively new society. I know what you must be thinking now. Are you kidding me? There's like truckloads of Malaysians on campus and we don't have a Malaysian society?! What's up with that? Well.. during my first year in Melbourne Uni., there was a club called the Malaysian Cultural Society (MCS). What happened to MCS? Heh.. here are some clues: corruption, money, treasurer, debt. Therefore, the club fell apart and was blacklisted by our Student Union. How embarrassing but how typical of Malaysian politics! Hmmmm... :/

Anyways.. this year, August (my cousin Colin's bestfriend and a childhood friend of mine) and Su Vyn (fellow collegemate) decided to start up another society for Malaysians. I don't wanna go through all the specific details so visit
http://momumomu.blogspot.com to read about the perils of setting up this society if you're interested. But in short, the both of them recruited two other people, namely Melissa (Mel) and Erwin to assist them in building the club. Thus, we had the following Acting-EXCO since the very beginning of the year 2006.

Act. President : Mel
Act. VP : August
Act. Sec. : Su Vyn
Act. Tres : Erwin

Mel knew about administrative stuff and the rules and procedures to set up a new club as she was the only one out of the four of them to have ever been involved in clubs and the Student Union. On the other hand, August was responsible for networking and ultimately bringing in other volunteers and Acting Committee Members into the team of which I was part of momentarily before experiencing a bout of guilt and priority-check.

It was during our first meeting and with I admit, minimal amount of interaction with Mel that I felt she was not assertive enough. Cliques began to form within the acting committee itself (by when I'd already resigned) with Mel, Su and Erwin in a tight trio and occasionally with Cliffe (fellow Mirian) who is Mel's boyfriend and August with the rest of the acting committee. Anyhow, all was well and peaceful until recently as the IGM approached. Acting upon cliques became more and more evident till the point that there was tension.

There was no direct confrontation (at least not as far as I know), only whispers behind closed doors. I supported August but I won't reiterate the details of the conversations I had had with him. The whole thing went like this. Mel was initially convinced that if August ran for President, she would surely lose and therefore she refused to submit her name for any positions at all. What annoyed me was that she used the excuse of being unable to "commit" because of the time-consuming job being a MoMU committe member is. Yes, even just being a committee member is hard enough let alone being President, I agree, because that was why I pulled out in the first place. But the fact that she used that excuse lightl, lead me to question her ability and her passion for this society. If she truly cared and wanted to be President in the first place, she should fight for it. Giving up just because she thought she would lose is equivalent to plain sulking. Which leads me to another point. I got the impression that she was looking just a tad bit too comfortable with her position as acting President. I am neither more annoyed nor more critical than I am disappointed by the fact that the moment she faced competition from August, she'd decided to give up. How is this a good leader?

ANYHOW, with that being said, after a lot of persuasion (which I believe was done by Su Vyn) Mel eventually did submit her name for nomination at the last minute. The night of 30th, I found out that Mel had submitted her name, I knew immediately that at that point, Su Vyn had succeeded in convincing her to run and that wasn't going to stop there. There would be a lot of "closed" campaigning and scheming if you will. That's the way politics works. Never say nothing is impossible, always assume everything.

Unfortunately, this was where August had a disadvantaged. His principles built on friendships and constructive assertiveness lead him to refuse in doing any sort of scheming. He did not want tension and is your basic peaceful-friends-with-everyone guy. I did not want to push him but merely asked him if he had thought about who he wanted working with him. I knew that with the tension, the trio would pull out all stops at this point, and if August was not careful, he would be cut-off completely or at the least be made an island within the committee itself. August replied saying that I should just vote for who I thought was capable. It was a fair point, but that did not help him at all.

Needless to say, this afternoon (01/09) a horde of Mel's, Su Vyn's and Erwin's personal friends (of whom I have never seen before until this point) showed up and Mel was voted in as President by majority. Another point of disadvantage for August and showed his "rookieness" in the business of politics was when he was making his speech. Obviously Mel had been coaxed and prompted (plus the fact that she has experience in socities) to subtlely undermine August's networking policies while he was too "peaceful" to try even counter Mel's faults.

After that the attack came even more quickly. Erwin submitted himself as VP, up against August. Where in the world did that come from? That was a blatant and outright attack, masterminded by who, I still can't be sure. However I can safely say that it was definitely not Erwin, because his speech lacked in content and I could tell that his heart just wasn't that into becoming VP (perhaps another case of "soft-heartedness" as was the case with August's uptake against Mel). Needless to say, August got the post of VP, Su Vyn as Secretary and Erwin as Treasurer.

All throughout the rest of the meeting, there were a few candidates who appeared out of the blue (friends of the trio no doubt) vying for positions such as Liaisons Officer and also trying to get on the committee as General Representatives. There was this girl Stephanie Ting, who submitted herself as Treasurer, no doubt to take Erwin's place as their original plan was to oust August and have Erwin right up there next to Mel. Everyone should've seen the dynamics of the committee unfolding before your eyes. It was so obvious it screamed "gang-up" so loudly, you just can't ignore it. August was sitting behind with his friends and girlfriend, while the other three were up front, encouraged and fueled by the entourage of people they'd asked to support them at the flight of moment. In the end, only Jerome, Emily, Su Ann and Siew Joo from the acting committee were officially instated.

Mel, Su Vyn, Erwin, Isaac and Kah Yau vs. August, Jerome, Emily and Su Ann, with Siew Joo whom I felt was more of a neutral by-stander in this conflict. It's hard isn't it? There is a line drawn down the middle. And then there is the IT Officer who is yet to be elected by the committee. Who else can it be but Cliffe who is Mel's boyfriend as well? That tips the balance a bit towards their side in this case.

In my opinion, things are not looking too good for August. Colin and I talked about it for a while at the stairs outside the meeting place before heading down and splitting ways. As much as we'd supported him, it's an understatement to say that August had been sabo-ed and left in the dark by people who were simply more experienced when it came to politics.

All the same, I'm still damn proud of him for trying. And one thing I know about him, he's really dedicated about this society, a far-cry from his almost non-existant co-curriculum record in secondary school. As he describes, "MoMU is my baby" and he will do almost anything to see it succeed. I suppose it is those of us who care to think about politics (even just within a student society) who will always be aware of how people can plot and scheme against you in the name of power.. But knowing August and the easygoing, carefree person he is, he's probably gotten over it by now... :)

Blah.. Hmeh.. Blhem....Hmm?

I'm so tired.
*stares at the articles and yawns*

OH WELL.. there's always tomorrow. Time to sleep. :)
